Wood windows are both thermally efficient and attractive as well. The main objections to wood framed windows focuses on cost, durability, and maintenance. Manufacturers have tried to answer some of these maintenance and durability questions by cladding the exterior of the frame in either aluminum or vinyl.
A clad wood window would be better protected from the effects of weathering and would not need to be repainted unless a color change was desired. Clad wood windows are more costly than a solid wood window because of the added cost of the cladding material and the labor to apply it making it one the most expensive replacement window systems out there. Additional costs associated with retrofitting a wood window into an opening that housed an aluminum window originally also is a consideration. The addition of casing, trim, and window sills to retrofit the wood windows must be considered when considering window replacement.
